Types of Car Insurance Cover
Car insurance is a legal requirement that
protects the motorist against liability in the event of accidents that they
may cause. Depending on the type of car insurance cover taken out, it can
also provide cover for the motorist’s own vehicle if it is damaged or stolen.
For private use there are generally three different types of cover. These
are referred to as Fully Comprehensive, Third Party and Third Party Fire &
Theft.
Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance
This type of policy will usually cover:
- Fire damage and/or theft
- Accidental damage to your own car
- A personal accident/death benefit - usually up to a certain amount as specified in the policy
- Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
- Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
- Liability for damage to other people's property
- Liability for towing a trailer or caravan - when attached to your car
- Cover for medical expenses as set out in your policy
Third Party Fire & Theft Car Insurance
Cover
This type of policy will usually cover:
- Fire damage and/or theft (with more restrictions than Fully Comprehensive Cover)
- Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
- Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
- Liability for damage to other people's property
- Cover for medical expenses as set out in your policy
Third Party Car Insurance Cover
This type pf policy will usually cover:
- Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
- Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
- Liability for damage to other people's property
- Liability for towing a trailer or caravan - when attached to your car
