Car Insurance Cover

Types of Car Insurance Cover

Car insurance is a legal requirement that protects the motorist against liability in the event of accidents that they may cause. Depending on the type of car insurance cover taken out, it can also provide cover for the motorist’s own vehicle if it is damaged or stolen.

For private use there are generally three different types of cover. These are referred to as Fully Comprehensive, Third Party and Third Party Fire & Theft.

Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance
This type of policy will usually cover:

  • Fire damage and/or theft
  • Accidental damage to your own car
  • A personal accident/death benefit - usually up to a certain amount as specified in the policy
  • Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
  • Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
  • Liability for damage to other people's property
  • Liability for towing a trailer or caravan - when attached to your car
  • Cover for medical expenses as set out in your policy

Third Party Fire & Theft Car Insurance Cover
This type of policy will usually cover:

  • Fire damage and/or theft (with more restrictions than Fully Comprehensive Cover)
  • Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
  • Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
  • Liability for damage to other people's property
  • Cover for medical expenses as set out in your policy

Third Party Car Insurance Cover
This type pf policy will usually cover:

  • Liability for injuries to passengers and other people
  • Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them
  • Liability for damage to other people's property
  • Liability for towing a trailer or caravan - when attached to your car

It is always best to check the fine print of a quotation, or ask the relevant questions before buying if you are unclear in any way .Concerning car insurance for learner driver or young driver, ask a parent or guardian for advice as to what your proposed car insurance policy does cover you for.
