Car Insurance for Modified Cars

Find a Specialist for Cover on Car Insurance for Modified Vehicles

Generally speaking, insurance companies are not keen on car modifications that improve performance speed in any way. Some insurers won't even quote on some kinds of car insurance for modified cars. However, although installing a high security alarm is a modification, it is obviously a good enhancement and would result in a saving with most companies.

There are other types of modification, such as fitting non-standard big flashy alloy wheels with low profile tyres, that may increase the likelihood of the vehicle being stolen or damaged. Each insurer is different and some will take on more risk than others.

Another unwanted type of modification, from an insurers point of view, is increasing the engine power drastically. 'Chipping' the engine may make the car more unstable and less safe, as a result, insurers don't really want to get involved with those types of vehicles.

The extra value to the vehicle, as well as increased performance, are the two main risks to an insurance company. It all depends on the type of modification being considered, as to what degree it will affect your car insurance premiums. Small changes may be quite acceptable, like adding tints to the windows, but it is best not to second guess. If you are unsure, as all policies vary, make sure you ask.

Some of the following changes to you vehicle may cause a problem for your insurer -

  • engine modifications
  • changes to the exhaust
  • change of suspension set-ups
  • adding spoilers
  • modified bodywork

Most insurers will provide cover for minor modifications but contact the following price comparison sites as they will automatically focus in on the specialists and save you a huge amount of time - and money.
