Cheap Cars to Insure

A Car with Low Insurance Group = Cheaper Car Insurance

The car insurance group classification of a car is one of the most important factors an insurer applies when forming a quotation. Choose a car with a low insurance group and you will have lower premiums.

The insurance industry has agreed group classifications for all UK cars. Insurers and car manufacturers need to have an agreed classification in order for insurers to apply a consistent view of a particular model.

Car insurance groups start at one and go up to 20. Each model with the same group banding will have similar features and engine size and can be compared fairly and accurately from an insurance point of view.

Small 'A' segment and 'B' segment cars are the lowest group ratings of 1 & 2. Group 3 - 6 cars are generally 'C' segment cars, or in normal speak - small family cars.

How is the Car Insurance Group Rating Calculated?

Almost 75% of all policy pay-outs in car insurance claims goes on repairing cars. How long each repair takes, along with the cost of the relevant car parts, will play a big part in deciding the cost of insurance premiums.

It is sensible to assume then that more expensive cars are more costly to repair and the parts are more expensive than cheap small capacity city cars. Here are the most important factors that go into assessing a cars Group Category:

1. New Car Values: Higher prices mean that, should a car be written off, the insurer would need to place a higher value the newer the vehicle is.

2. Performance: Top speed and Acceleration. Performance cars are likely to be driven faster and as a result a higher risk.

3. Damage and Parts Costs: The possible extent of damage to each car model and the cost of the parts involved in its repair. Prestige cars often have lavish paint finishes and extra coats so this will contribute to a higher Group rating. The lower these costs are the lower the group in general terms.

4. Repair Times: The longer it takes to repair a vehicle the bigger the overall cost to insurers.

5. Car Body Shells: The car body shell and the availability of a replacement will be taken into account in group ratings. They are essential for near write-offs as they may need to be replaced.

6. Car Security: If the vehicle has a high security rating, with a high category Thatcham system, this can help to balance costs. All of the following will help: u

  • tracker systems
  • high security door locks (dead locks)
  • alarm/immobiliser systems
  • glass etching
  • coded audio equipment
  • locking nuts for alloy wheels
  • visible VIN numbers

  • View from the UK: The Progressive’s Dilemma
American progressives long have looked upon Britain’s Labour Party as an exemplar of how to prioritize social welfare without entirely alienating business.
