Crackdown on Motor Insurance Fraud
South Yorkshire Police have seized over 350 vehicles from law breakers.
Offenders who have been apprehended for no insurance, carrying drugs or
illegal weapons, have been caught out by police using new high-tech equipment
that reads number plates automatically.
Special Constables in other areas of the country have also been operating
specifically using the auto ‘number plate’ readers. Police vehicles and
vans are now patrolling the streets with the Automatic Number Plate Reader
(ANPR) technology.
Cameras are usually mounted on the roof and aimed towards parked vehicles
at the roadside. The camera will check the number plate and refer to a database
of untaxed vehicles.
When the APNR identifies an untaxed vehicle it can be clamped or or taken
away and impounded, once all the necessary checks are made. It is predicted
that confiscated vehicles is set to increase dramatically, possibly over
one hundred thousand.
